New Research on the Impact of Military Airborne Hazards and Burn Pit Exposures

Millions of U.S. service members deployed to the Middle East and Southwest Asia were exposed to toxic airborne hazards from burn pits. Research shows these exposures can cause lasting lung damage, including scarring, particulate matter deposits, and respiratory symptoms that standard tests often fail to detect.

The PACT Act of 2022 expanded benefits and healthcare for Veterans exposed to toxic substances, but much work remains. Ongoing research focuses on advanced diagnostic tools, understanding the mechanisms of lung injury, and improving care standards.

Supporting this work is essential to ensuring Veterans receive the care they need.
