Advancing the PACT Act: A Call for Action in 2024
Reflecting on more than a year since the passage of the PACT Act, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. While progress has been made, there is still work to be done to fulfill the potential of this crucial legislation. In 2024, our hope is directed towards the Veterans Administration (VA) taking immediate and concrete steps to aid our heroes suffering from exposure to toxic chemicals overseas.
Specifically, urgent action is needed to establish a diagnostic code for constrictive bronchiolitis (CB), one of the 23 presumptive conditions for burn pit exposure outlined in PACT. Additionally, the VA must implement a screening process utilizing non-invasive functional lung imaging to efficiently identify Constrictive Bronchiolitis and other deployment-related respiratory diseases. The adoption of these new technologies through a pilot program will ensure that more veterans receive the help they need promptly, fulfilling the promise of PACT.
The stark reality is that our warfighters are still suffering, and fulfilling the intent of the law is our moral obligation. Under PACT, healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances were expanded, removing the burden of proof. Since its enactment in August 2022, the VA has received over 978,000 claims, underscoring the urgency of action. This year, both the US House and Senate supported the use of non-invasive, FDA-approved, and four-dimensional lung modeling technologies for screening, aiming to save veterans from unnecessary, invasive procedures.
As we look ahead to 2024, let us unite in advocating for the swift implementation of these critical measures. The health and well-being of our veterans depend on it, and together, we can fulfill the promise of the PACT Act.
