STATEMENT FROM BURN PITS 360

Burn Pits 360 stands with the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who may once again be called into harm’s way. We know all too well that the consequences of war do not end when service members return home. For many veterans, the war follows them through toxic exposures, respiratory disease, cancer, and invisible wounds that can last a lifetime.

Modern warfare exposes service members not only to combat, but also to the instrumentalities of war—burn pits, airborne hazards, depleted uranium, industrial toxins, and other environmental exposures that can cause lasting damage to the lungs and body long after the battlefield is behind them.

America must not repeat the mistakes of the past. If we send our troops to war, we must also commit to protecting them from environmental hazards, monitoring their health, and caring for them long after the mission ends.

The Honoring Our PACT Act was passed because generations of veterans were exposed to toxic burn pits and denied care for far too long. While the law represents historic progress, one critical lesson remains clear: early lung screening and long-term monitoring must become standard practice for deployed service members and veterans exposed to airborne hazards. Too many veterans are diagnosed only after irreversible damage has already occurred.

For years, the veteran community was forced to stand Firewatch—keeping watch over our brothers and sisters when the system failed them. That same vigilance must continue today. As new conflicts emerge, we must ensure that the health of those who serve is protected from the very beginning, not decades after the damage is done.

Caring for our nation’s veterans, caregivers, and survivors is not optional — it is our moral obligation.

“War should never mean a lifetime of unanswered illness. If America sends our service members into harm’s way, we must also stand ready to care for them for life including early lung screenings and long-term monitoring before disease becomes irreversible. America has never had a problem sending troops to war. The test of our nation is whether we stand by them when the cost of that war shows up as lung disease or cancer.

We must continue to stand Firewatch for those who serve.” Rosie Torres Co-Founder, Burn Pits 360
